Passports on a table

The UAE's Golden Visa gives eligible individuals long-term residency — typically five or ten years, renewable, without a mainland employer sponsoring the visa. For business owners, eligibility runs through a handful of distinct routes, and the paperwork that supports each one is different enough that it's worth knowing which route you're actually applying under before you start assembling documents.

The main routes for business owners

Investment

Available to owners of a public or private investment fund, or individuals making a qualifying investment in a UAE-based company or real estate, above the thresholds set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). Documentation typically centers on proof of the investment itself — bank transfer records, share certificates, or title deeds — and confirmation the funds are legitimately sourced.

Business ownership / entrepreneurship

Available to owners of an existing UAE business that meets specified criteria, or founders whose business has reached a qualifying valuation or has been previously approved by an accredited business incubator. This route relies heavily on your trade license, financial statements, and — where relevant — a letter of approval or valuation from a recognized body.

Specialized talent / professional qualification

Available to individuals with recognized professional standing — specialized professionals, executives, or those holding qualifications in fields the UAE prioritizes. This route runs on salary certificates, professional credentials, and employer or institutional endorsement rather than investment proof.

What actually gets requested

  • Passport and existing UAE residency documentation, where applicable.
  • Trade license and, for the business-ownership route, recent audited or management financial statements.
  • Proof of investment, ownership percentage, or valuation, depending on the route.
  • No-objection or supporting documentation from the relevant free zone or mainland authority, where the business is registered.
  • Medical fitness and Emirates ID biometric enrollment, standard across all routes once the initial approval stage clears.

Where applications actually stall

In our experience, the delay is rarely the government processing time itself — it's assembling financial documentation that's internally consistent. A business ownership application backed by financial statements that don't reconcile against the trade license's registered activity, or an investment application where the source of funds isn't cleanly documented, gets queried and sent back for clarification. That costs weeks, not days.

The eligibility criteria are published. The part that actually determines your timeline is whether your supporting documents are internally consistent before you submit, not after a query comes back.
